Anatomy of a Smear Campaign: Gab

TIMELINE – 10/27/2018

10:00 AM

First report of a potential shooting inside Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill.

10:35 AM

11:07 PM

Suspect identified as Robert Bowers via radio broadcast.

11:14 PM

Gab Account identified.

11:15 AM

Suspect surrenders, sources say multiple people are dead and police say three officers are shot.

12:03 PM

Gab releases statement reiterating their policies on Medium (Gab is now banned from Medium, but below is a screenshot and archive link).

In their statement they clearly disavow and condemn these actions.

Gab unequivocally disavows and condemns all acts of terrorism and violence.

Additionally, they declare that they are in contact and are cooperating with law enforcement and willing to do anything they can do to help.

Gab took swift and proactive action to contact law enforcement immediately. We first backed up all user data from the account and then proceeded to suspend the account. We then contacted the FBI and made them aware of this account and the user data in our possession. We are ready and willing to work with law enforcement to see to it that justice is served.

12:40 PM

Sleeping Giants Tweets out to PayPal and Stripe that they should remove Gab from their service.

Here is a compilation showing how Sleeping Giants constantly cries about deplatforming their political opponents. You would think with their 211,000 Twitter followers they could spread their message and try to refute those who disagree with them instead of trying to get them depersoned from the internet. These only took a couple minutes of searching to find, they have endless Tweets like this.

Blue checkmarks and far left Twitter accounts capitalize on the Suspect having posted on Gab as an opportunity to pressure these payment processors to drop Gab despite their disavowal, reinforcement of their policies, and proactive cooperation with law enforcement.

4:35 PM

Gab banned by PayPal.

10:33 PM

By the end of the night they had been banned by PayPal, Stripe, Medium, Joyent (Web Hosting), and GoDaddy. Think about that, because of one users post on this platform they were close to being 100% removed from the internet.

Here are examples of other acts of terror where the perpetrators had used social media including deaths livestreamed on Facebook Live. No mainstream media calls for these social media giants to be removed.

In fact, here are hundreds of Tweets with direct threats of violence towards President Donald Trump.

With this precedent the Silicon Valley tech conglomerate can continue to use their stranglehold on the market to virtually deperson their competition and political opponents and this should concern everybody. Gab has been forced to jump through all sorts of hurdles to aim to get back on the Internet shortly (statement below) but expect this trend to continue against Gab and other platforms.
